Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Killer Bees (11-11-4) had been battling injuries and a short roster for the past week, but it was a newcomer who helped propel them to a hard fought win over the Allen Americans (15-5-4) in a shootout Wednesday night at State Farm Arena.
Goals from Tomas Klempa and Mark Magnowski along with a strong performance by goaltender Dan Dunn helped make a statement against the first place Americans.
For Magnowski it was an excellent first night of work in a Bees uniform this season. The winger scored two goals.
The Bees opened the game strong, winning puck battles and throwing shots on Allen goaltender Marco Cousineau, but it was the Americans who struck first. After intercepting a clearing attempt from Nicolas Rioux, Jason Deitsch slid the puck to a waiting Jarret Lukin who wasted no time shooting.
Early in the second period Bees captain David Marshall took matters into his own hands. After beating his man to the puck below the goal line Marshall held until he spotted an open Klempa waiting in the slot. Klempa took the feed and tied the game at one.
Later in the second it was another below the goal play that gave the Bees the lead. With 4:23 left in the second Dan Gendur found a waiting Magnowski in front on the net who was more than ready to fire it past Cousineau for the lead. Magnowski struck again in the third to put the Bees up 3-1.
Allen however fought back to send the game to overtime with a late third period rally.
After a scoreless overtime the game went to a shootout. Marshall, Lee, and Gendur scored to give the Bees the shootout victory and snap their nine-game losing streak.
The Bees will head up to Allen for their final game before the Christmas break, they return to the Hive in 2012 with a January 13 showdown with the Texas Brahmas.
