Kernels name new manager

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa âBobby Magallanes will be the manager of the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the 2004 Midwest League baseball season, the Anaheim Angels announced Tuesday.
Joining Magallanes on the Kernels staff are pitching coach Erik Bennett, hitting coach Justin Baughman and trainer Brian Reinker.
This is the first managerial assignment for Magallanes, 34, who spent the past two seasons as hitting coach for the Angels' Mesa entry in the Arizona (Rookie) League. Before that Magallanes played for 12 seasons, mostly in the Mexican League.
Magallanes is a native of Downey, Calif. He was selected by the Montreal Expos in the 44th round of the June 1987 draft out of Bell High School. He opted not to sign with the Expos and attended Cerritos (Calif.) Junior College for two seasons. He was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 50th round of the June 1989 draft and signed with the Mariners. He also played in the Cubs and Astros organizations, topping out in Double A in 1996. He played in the Mexican League and Independent leagues through 2001 before retiring and joining the Angels organization as hitting coach at Mesa.
Bennett, 35, was the Kernels pitching coach in 2003. His playing career from 1989 until 2001 included major league appearances with the Angels and Twins.
Baughman, 29, was the Kernels' shortstop in 1996, when he batted .248 and stole 50 bases. He made it to the big leagues with the Angels two years later. His career was cut short when his left leg was shattered while he was playing in the Mexican Winter League in November 1998. He missed all of 1999 recovering from the broken leg. He made it back to the big leagues with the Angels for 16 games in 2000. He retired last season after stints in the White Sox at Devil Rays organizations.
Reinker was the trainer at Mesa last season.
The Kernels open the 2004 Midwest League season on April 8 at home against Peoria.
