Kelly Cup Playoffs Producing Record Shutouts

Published on April 26, 2007 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - Two of the four games on Wednesday were shutouts bringing the total number of shutouts in the 2007 Kelly Cup Playoffs to 10 in 48 games (20.8 percent).

The highest number of shutouts in an ECHL postseason is 15 in 67 games (22.4 percent) in the 1999 Kelly Cup Playoffs. There were 12 shutouts in 66 games (18.2 percent) in 2005 and 10 shutouts in 61 games (16.4 percent) in 2003 and 10 shutouts in 75 games (13.3 percent) in 2000.

The first shutout of 2007 didn't occur until the 10th game when Idaho's Steve Silverthorn stopped 28 shots in a 3-0 win against Stockton on Apr. 11.

There have been nine shutouts in the last 38 games (23.7 percent) including three shutouts on Apr. 19, which is the most in a single day in the postseason in the 19-year history of the ECHL. Seven times there had been two shutouts in a day in the postseason. The two shutouts on Wednesday gives the current postseason two multiple-shutout days. The most multiple-shutout days is three in 1999 when there were two shutouts on Apr. 10 and 14 and May 1.

Maxime Gingras of Richmond holds the ECHL record for postseason shutouts with five in 1999. Gingras also set the record for most shutouts in the Kelly Cup Finals in 1999 with two, a record that Scott Stirling of Atlantic City tied in 2003.

Adam Berkhoel of Dayton, Cedrick Desjardins of Cincinnati and Craig Kowalski of Florida are tied for the Kelly Cup Playoffs lead with two shutouts each while Rejean Beauchemin of Bakersfield, Derek Gustafson of Alaska, Steve Silverthorn of Idaho and Matt Yeats of Texas each have one shutout.
