EDMONTON, AB. - With two keepers out with long-term injuries and one heading to college, FC Edmonton has inked a Canadian to back up Rein Baart.

Twenty-three-year-old David Monsalve, from North York, began his professional career in 2007 with Toronto FC before moving on to Finland where he played for FC Inter Turku until 2011.

Monsalve has experience at the international level, including having been capped with the senior men's National team in 2010.

Now that he's back in Canada, the young keeper is anxious to perform for his new team.

"It means a lot to have the opportunity to be back playing in Canada," he said after signing. "It's always fun to share the field with old friends week in and week out. I'm hoping to get out there and be effective in order to help the team get results. I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Director of Soccer Operations, Joe Petrone, said the need for another keeper was obvious and he's pleased that Monsalve was available.

"With the injuries to Lance Parker and Jaswinder Gill and the departure of our back up keeper Justin Ammar for duties with NAIT, we needed to find a creditable young replacement for the immediate and long term future of the club," Petrone said. "David gives us comfort in case he is asked to play and as a potential future starter. He comes with some professional experience at the top pro level. He will definitely help to fill the void created by injuries."

Monsalve has been on trial with the club for a few weeks and will join the first team immediately.
