PIKEVILLE, KY. - The Perry County office of the Kentucky Department of Protection and Permanency will hold its annual candle light vigil April 1 from 5-6 p.m. at New Hope Christian Center in Hazard in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year's event promises to be the office's biggest of its kind to date. Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo will be in attendance at the ceremony as one of the event's guest speakers. East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley has also accepted an invitation to serve as one of the dignitaries present during the event. Keathley will help Lt. Governor Mongiardo present certificates to the Kentucky State Police, court judges and Hazard Mayor Bill Gorman.

"It's an honor to have the opportunity to get involved and support National Child Abuse Prevention Month," said Keathley.

An Eastern Kentucky native, Keathley recently finished his first season at the helm of the Kentucky professional basketball team. East Kentucky is one of four current CBA expansion franchises. The Miners finished the 2007-08 regular-season 26-22.

Increasing public awareness of the need to ensure the safety and welfare of children led to the passage of the first Federal child protection legislation, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), in 1974. While CAPTA has been amended many times over the years, most recently by the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003, the purpose of the original legislation remains intact. Today, the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the Federal agency charged with supporting States, Tribes, and communities in providing programs and services to protect children and strengthen families.
