PIKEVILLE, KY. - East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley was in attendance at the Perry County office of the Kentucky Department of Protection and Permanency's candle light light in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month Tuesday, April 1 at New Hope Christian Center in Hazard. A father of four, Keathley joined Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo and other dignitaries for the exceptional cause.

"I thought the event went extremely well," said Keathley. "I was glad I could be there to lend my support towards a very important cause. We have made a commitment as an organization to get involved in the community. This is just one of many events I'll be attending during the month to bring awareness against child abuse to as many people as possible. I encourage everyone to join myself and the East Kentucky Miners organization in the fight against child abuse and neglect."

During the Perry County event, there were eight candles lit in honor of eight children that lost their lives to child abuse in the current Eastern Mountain Region. Perry County is one of 16 counties in the region.

Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo gave a short speech about the importance of the fight against child abuse. The Lieutenant Governor along with Keathley and Perry County Judge Executive Denny Ray Noble assisted in handing out awards to local judges, law enforcement agencies and foster parent association to thank them for their efforts in the fight against child abuse and neglect. The Cabinet for Health and Family Services extended a very special "thank you" to the people who attended and all that performed at the event. The Cabinet for Health and Family Services also extended its thanks to all of the community partners for their input and assistance in the planning of the candle light vigil. The Cabinet is hopeful everyone will learn from the program and continue to help fight child abuse and neglect.

Keathley will attend a similar event in Prestonsburg April 24. The East Kentucky coach will also get involved in a 5K run against child abuse to be held in Pikeville.

Lieutenant Governor Mongiardo, a Hazard resident, also showed his support for the East Kentucky Miners in a conversation with Coach Keathley before the event. Mongiardo plans on attending a Miners game next season. "I enjoyed the time I got to spend with the Lieutenant Governor," Keathley commented. "He was very supportive of the Miners. He felt the franchise could bring economic growth to Eastern Kentucky."
