East Kentucky Miners News Release
PIKEVILLE, KY. - Continuing his effort in the fight against child abuse, East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley served as a guest speaker Saturday at the conclusion of a 5K Run/Walk held for Judy's Place for Kids. The run/walk, held at Pikeville City Park, raised several thousands of dollars to help in the fight against child abuse. Pikeville College men's basketball head coach Kelly Wells was also in attendance at the 5K event. His wife, Shawne, participated in the event.
"I was very impressed with the 5K event that took place in Pikeville this past Saturday," said Keathley. "To be asked to attend and lend my support as the guest speaker was an honor and I had a good time listening to the music and speaking with fellow supporters of this very important cause."
The Miners coach was inspired by Ashley McCutcheon, a local mother who helped coordinate the event. "I think the biggest thing I took from the event is that one person can move mountains and one person can make a difference if their heart is moved in the right direction," Keathley added. "Ashley made me proud to be a part of the event. She was one of the central figures behind making the Judy's Place for Kids 5K Run/Walk possible and as successful as it was. She is 22-year-old mother of one.
From what I understand, she decided to take a stand against child abuse after reading a terrible story about a child that had been victimized. She took it upon herself to seek out the right people and find ways she could get involved in the community. That all goes back to the fact that one person can make a difference in the lives of others if one just takes the time to get involved and help. Ashley helped raise several thousands of dollars for Judy's Place for Kids. The runners that showed up took a stand and the Marine Corps also showed their support. All in all, it was a very productive event to be a part of. It was an event that I know will make a difference in the lives of many children. I congratulate Ashley and Judy's Place for Kids for putting on an outstanding event." Sixty-plus runners competed in the 5K Run/Walk for Judy's Place for Kids. Runners competed under sunny skies.
Keathley will attend the Take A Stand event in Pikeville April 23. The Miners coach will be in Floyd County April 24 to continue the fight against child abuse in another event.
