Nashville Kats News Release
NASHVILLE (Feb. 16, 2005) â The Nashville Kats have acquired offensive/defensive lineman Carey Clayton from the Columbus Destroyers in exchange for defensive specialist Art Smith, Kats head coach Pat Sperduto announced on Wednesday.
Clayton (6'2, 290) is a natural center who played the 2004 season with Columbus. He has spent the first three weeks of this season on injured reserve. Last year, the two-way player finished with nine total tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He played the 2003 season in NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals. Although he played the majority of that year on the offensive line, he filled in on the defensive side after injuries had riddled the team. Clayton has also spent time with the NFL's San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. He played collegiately at Texas-El Paso.
Clayton comes to Nashville in exchange for Smith (6-0, 200), who has been on the Kats' exempt roster. He is currently with the NFL's Green Bay Packers.
"Carey is a guy that we were really impressed with on film from last season," said Sperduto. "He is a tough player that can give us more of what we need up front and make us a better team overall. We are excited to have him."
The Kats (1-2) head to Long Island to face the New York Dragons on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be carried live on WKDF (103.3 FM) and televised on a tape-delayed basis by Fox Sports Net South. The telecast is slated to begin at 8:30 p.m.
