Nashville Kats News Release
The Nashville Kats defense was the main ingredient in a 37-21 win over the Tampa Bay Storm on Sunday holding the Storm scoreless in three of four quarters. In front of 8,000 fans at the Gaylord Entertainment Center, the Storm were scoreless until the second quarter thanks to the pressure the defense put on Storm quarterback Shane Stafford combined with a strong offensive push. The Kats defense was lead by Khalil Carter who finished the game with nine solo tackles, 10 assists and five passes defensed.
Nashville opened on offense with a 38-yard pass completion to Fred Coleman and then three plays later, Kats newcomer and former Tampa Bay Storm Ironman T.T. Toliver scored on a one-yard run. The Kats recovered a fumbled snap just minutes later resulting in a 17-yard touchdown catch by Coleman. The Storm receivers struggled against the Kats secondary resulting in a scoreless first quarter.
After a Tony Dodson 24-yard field goal for the Kats, the Storm's initial score came on a Lawrence Samuels 6-yard touchdown reception shortly into the second quarter. The Kats were still up 16-7, but the Storm scored again just minutes later on a six-yard run by Stafford. The Kats held onto the lead with an 8-yard TD run by Jarrick Hillery but the Storm struck again on a three-yard TD catch by Clif Dell to close out the first half 23-21.
The Kats held onto their lead in the third quarter scoring on a 19-yard TD reception by Toliver, who was named offensive player of the game. The Kats defense continued their hold on the Storm when OL/DL Nate Bolling recorded his first career sack in his first career game on Stafford to close out the third quarter, again holding the Storm to a scoreless quarter.
In the fourth, the Kats continued the offensive push with a TD from Lindsay Fleshman followed by another Bolling sack on Stafford. In the closing minute, Kats DS Reggie Stevens intercepted a Stafford TD pass to secure the lead. The pressure from the Kats defense proved too much for the Storm, again holding Tampa Bay to a scoreless quarter. Stafford finished the game 23 for 42 in passing.
