Katia Named Player of the Month

Published on August 2, 2002 under Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Friday, August 2, 2002) - San Jose CyberRays forward Katia has been selected as the WUSA's July Player of the Month by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. The Brazilian striker scored seven goals in six games while keeping the CyberRays in playoff contention.

San Jose went 3-2-1 in July largely because of the goal scoring of Katia, who twice was named WUSA Player of the Week during the month. Katia scored seven of her league-leading 15 goals in July as well as two of her three assists for the season, a total of 16 points. She is currently on a five-game goal-scoring streak that began July 10 in a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Beat. That game also was the first of a pair of two-goal games for Katia in July. In the second, July 27 against the New York Power, she also added an assist to make it a five-point game, a career high.

Part of San Jose's Brazilian triangle with teammates Sissi and Pretinha, Katia leads the WUSA in shots (83) and shots on goal (48). Her four game-winning goals and 1.83 points per game average rank second in the league.
