Philadelphia Charge News Release
The Philadelphia Charge attempt to qualify for the postseason for the second consecutive year this Saturday, August 3 when they host the U.S. National Team member Julie Foudy and the San Diego Spirit starting at 7 pm. The game can be seen locally on Comcast SportsNet.
The Charge (10-3-5, 35 pts) are at the top of the WUSA standings and need a win to qualify for the playoffs. However, the Charge could make the playoffs with a San Jose loss on Saturday afternoon at Carolina.
With three regular season games remaining on the schedule, just seven points separate five teams. Philadelphia could secure homefield advantage this weekend as well. With a win on Saturday and a loss by Atlanta against Washington on Sunday, the Charge would host a semifinal game on Saturday, August 17. Tickets for the playoffs are on sale now by calling the Charge at 215-467-GOAL or your local Ticketmaster outlet.
Philadelphia has had some problems with the Spirit this season. San Diego is 1-0-1 versus Philadelphia, with this being the club's only trip to Villanova Stadium this season. Philadelphia is 2-1-2 all-time against San Diego, posting a 1-0-1 mark and outscoring the Spirit 4-1 at Villanova Stadium.
The Charge could have a couple of key players back in their lineup this weekend, as forward Marinette Pichon and defender Heather Mitts have been activated off the injured list. Pichon has missed the last two games with a toe injury and is listed as questionable, while Mitts missed the club's last game with a hip pointer. Mitts is listed as probable.
Philadelphia plays its regular-season home finale Wednesday, August 7 when it takes on Brandi Chastain and the defending Founders Cup champion San Jose CyberRays beginning at 7 p.m. The Charge will be giving away Lorrie Fair Bobblehead Dolls to the first 2,000 kids 14 and under. Call 215-467-GOAL for ticket information.
