
Kate Leary of the Riveters Is Named NWHL Newcomer of the Year

The NWHL Newcomer of the Year honor has been awarded to forward Kate Leary of the Metropolitan Riveters.
Leary, a Boston College graduate who joined the NWHL this season after two years in the CWHL and one in the SWHL, becomes the third winner of the award. Jonna Curtis of the Minnesota Whitecaps received it last season, and Hayley Scamurra of the Buffalo Beauts won it in 2017-18.
Boston Pride goaltender Lovisa Selander finished in second place for the award, while Buffalo defender Marie-Jo Pelletier was third.
Some highlights of Leary's 2019-20 regular season with the Riveters, who face the Whitecaps in Saint Paul on Sunday in an Isobel Cup Semifinal:
Tied for second among all newcomers in scoring with 27 points (16 goals, 11 assists in 22 games).
Set Riveters' team record for goals in a single season (16) and had the second-highest scoring season in club history.
Began her first season of NWHL hockey with a 12-game scoring streak in which she had 20 points.
Named the NWHL Player of the Month for December 2019.
Named NWHL All-Star.
Named VEDA Player of the Week on Feb. 18, 2020
The voting process for Defender of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and Most Valuable Player was conducted by the league with a panel of media members who regularly cover the NWHL and other women's hockey initiatives. The panel included writers from The Athletic, Boston Herald, The Hockey News, The Hockey Writers, The Ice Garden, and The Victory Press, along with select broadcasters.
