Washington Kastles News Release

The Kastles lost two very close matches on Wednesday and Thursday in New York. On Thursday, the Kastles and NY Sportimes were tied at 4-4 in the fifth and deciding set but Jesse Witten was able to win a tiebreaker (5-2) over Scott Oudsema for a 21-20 win. A day earlier on Wednesday, the team traveled to Albany to face the NY Buzz, and lost another match decided at the end in a Supertiebreaker (7-4), 22-21.

The Kastles (2-3) and Sportimes (4-0) played an even match through four sets. The Sportimes men's doubles pairing of Brian Wilson and Witten downed Justin Gimelstob and Scott Oudsema 5-4 in the first match. Mashona Washington and Serena Williams tied the match at nine with a 5-4 victory in the second set over Bethanie Mattek and Hana Sromova. The Kastles mixed doubles pairing of Williams and Gimelstob gave the squad a lead with a 5-2 victory in the third set over Mattek and Wilson. However, the Kastles lost the lead when Mattek downed Mashona Washington 5-2, in the fourth set. Washington was called in to substitute for Serena Williams who hurt her knee when she was down 3-1. Williams injury does not appear to serious.

Williams led the Kastles with 57 total points on the night and Oudsema had four aces while not double faulting in the match.

On Wednesday, the Kastles lost their first match ever in a Supertiebreaker to the Buzz (4-1). After four sets the Kastles led 19-16, but Nathan Healey got the best of Justin Gimelstob in men's singles. Healey won the fifth set 5-2, making the score 21-21. World TeamTennis rules dictate that when the two teams are tied at the end of the fifth set, the players on the court for that set play a 13-point Supertiebreaker with the first player to reach seven points wins. Gimelstob hung tough and had the score tied at 4-4 but Healey won the last three points to win the Supertiebreaker 7-4 and the match for the Buzz.Scott and Justin

The Kastles return home tonight when the NY Buzz come to Kastles Stadium at CityCenterDC. Joining the Kastles for the evening is 2008 US Olympic Team member Robby Ginepri. Gates open at 5:15 PM and the first serve is at 7 PM. It promises to be a fun Friday with the hot local band, Sick Feed, playing at 6:15 and $2.00 Coors Lights all night long.
