Jason Jordan of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC was named the United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division Most Valuable Player for the 2005 season, the USL announced today.
"I am very honoured, humbled and excited," said Jordan. "This award is a tribute to the hard work my teammates displayed throughout the season, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of them as well as my family, friends and the entire Whitecaps staff."
Jason Jordan, 27, finished the regular season as the league's leading scorer with an impressive 17 goals and three assists. This is the fifth straight year and sixth time overall the native of Richmond, B.C. has led Vancouver in scoring. Jordan, a veteran of nine years, is Vancouver's third all-time leading goal scorer with 74 goals in 205 games.
"Jason had a great season and it's wonderful that he is receiving the recognition he deserves," said Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi. "He has tremendous ability and I believe he will continue to improve next season and in years to come."
This is the first time a player from the Vancouver 86ers/Whitecaps franchise has received this honour since joining the league in 1993. In addition, Jordan is the second consecutive player from a Canadian club to be named the league MVP; last year Montreal's goalkeeper Greg Sutton won the award.
USL awards are voted on by the league's coaches and general managers. Jordan edged out Montreal's Mauro Biello and Rochesterâs Kirk Wilson in league voting.
Other honorees included Puerto Rico Islanders goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who was named Rookie of the Year. Kennedy played every minute in goal for the Islanders, earning a 10-10-8 record and five shutouts on the season. Seattle Sounders defender Taylor Graham was named the Defender of the Year. Graham played every minute for the Sounders and recorded two goals. Montreal Impact coach Nick DeSantis was named the Coach of the Year leading his team to the first overall record of 18-3-7, while conceding a league low of 15 goals.
