Joe Salerno Named Coach of the Year

April 2, 2019 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) News Release

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Joe Salerno of the Moncton Magic has been named Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 season.

Coach Joe Salerno led the Moncton Magic to their best regular season to date. The Magic were difficult to beat at the Avenir Centre. They completed the 2018-19 campaign setting a new franchise home record of 17-3. Salerno earned Coach of the Month honours twice (November 2018, March 2019).

Also, the Salerno-led squad mounted an historic 4th quarter comeback scoring 49 points in the period on the road defeating their provincial rival Saint John Riptide on March 6th.

"Congratulations goes out Coach Salerno on an outstanding job in a season that had no shortage of adversity and challenging moments", said Deputy Commissioner Audley Stephenson. "The Moncton Magic entered the 2018-19 campaign focused on a singular goal of finishing with best record in the league. It was Salerno's preparation, hard work and careful attention to detail that has the Magic positioned for great post season."

During his second season with the Magic, Salerno accomplished a feat that no previous coach for an NBL-based Moncton franchise has ever achieved - he took Moncton to the #1 overall seed in the playoffs, and with that, home-court advantage throughout the 2019 NBL Canada postseason.

During the 2018-19 season, he enjoyed successes from Corey Allmond (18.1 ppg, 116 3-pointers, 117 assists), Billy White (17.4 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Nick Evans (51 blocks, new Magic team record).
