Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA) - Three JetHawks pitchers helped hold the Quakes scoreless, and ensure that one run was all the JetHawks needed in a 1-0 win Wednesday morning. The win gives the JetHawks a seven game win streak.
Greg Smith, coming off a complete game shutout, pitched six more scoreless frames. Smith held the Quakes to just two hits while striking out six. Smith won his seventh consecutive start to become the first California League pitcher to get to seven wins. Mark Rosen pitched two perfect innings for a hold and Dan Pohlman closed things off in the ninth to earn his second save.
The run came with two outs in the seventh inning after Quakes starter Jose Arredondo, the league leader in strikeouts, had already fanned 11 batters. Rusty Ryal drew a walk and stole second base. In a costly defensive lapse, neither middle infielder covered second base on the steal. Catcher Ben Johnson's throw sailed into center field, sending Ryal to third. Javier Brito walked, putting runners at first and third. Brett Butler put on a play in which Brito bluffed towards second base as if to steal, drawing a throw. Brito then stopped an intentionally got caught in a rundown, staying safe just long enough for Ryal to steal home for the only run of the game.
The JetHawks finish the road trip with another morning game at Rancho Cucamonga. Kellen Raab (2-4) makes the start for the JetHawks against 2005 American League Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon, making a rehabilitation outing for the Quakes. Game time is 10:30 with the Burns Pharmacy JetHawks Pre-Game Show starting at 10:15.
The JetHawks return home Friday, June 2 for a six game homestand. The homestand also marks the start of the JetHawks Endless Summer Kickoff Weekend, complete with fireworks, giveaways, and the JetHawks first ever salute to Antelope Valley commuters. Individual game tickets, season tickets, and mini-plan packages are available at the JetHawks box office, by phone at 661-726-5400, as well as at www.jethawks.com.
