JetHawks Lost Heartbreaker in Rancho

RANCHO CUGAMONGA, CA - The stage was set. The JetHawks were about to win to create a four-way tie for first place in the South Division with five games to play. And then they didn't.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes started a rally that resulted in three runs and 5-4 come-from-behind victory on Monday night at The Epicenter. The JetHawks were 27-0 when leading after eight innings; the Quakes were 0-25 when trailing after eight innings.
New closer Jason Chowning (0-1) blew his first save chance and took the loss. After striking out Chris Jacobs to start the ninth, the right-hander allowed a single to Steve Domecus and a RBI-double Bobby Coyle. Leon Landry followed with his fourth hit of the game, a single to centerfield to drive in the tying run.
Manager Rodney Linares, who had just watched his team blow its 11th save of the season, came to the mound to bring in Kirk Clark. The former closer allowed a single to Joc Pederson, intentionally walked C.J. Retherford to load the bases and then worked a full count against Michael Pericht. The designated hitter, who had walked with the bases loaded earlier in the game, lined a fastball to left field to drive in Landry.
It was the Quakes (35-30) eighth win in a row and moved them into sole possession of first place for the first time this season. The loss pushed the JetHawks (33-32) to two games back with three teams ahead of them in the standings.
The loss was amplified by the fact the JetHawks had rallied to comeback and take a lead in the eighth inning. Down 2-1, Jonathan Meyer led off with a hit and was moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Enrique Hernandez. Rene Garcia followed with the game-tying hit.
Quakes closer Eric Eadington was called in from the bullpen to ended up facing Domingo Santana with the bases loaded and two out. Santana drove an 0-2 pitch into centerfield for a hit, scoring two runs and giving the JetHawks a 4-2 lead.
The JetHawks offense was quiet through the first six innings against starter Garrett Gould. George Springer, who returned to the lineup as the designated hitter after three days off with a hip flexor injury, hit a solo home run in his first at-bat. It was the only run Gould allowed in six innings.
Cal League All-Star Bobby Doran rebounded nicely after his worst start of the season. The right-hander allowed two runs in six innings.
The JetHawks and Quake will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday night at The Epicenter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Tyson Perez (4-1, 5.80) will start against Zach Lee (2-2, 4.37).
