(LANCASTER, CA) - Austin Wates went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs as the JetHawks defeated Bakersfield 7-6 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Clear Channel Stadium Wednesday. It is Lancaster's first series victory since the JetHawks won two out of three games against Lake Elsinore June 5-7.
Bakersfield drew first blood with a run off JetHawks starter Robby Donovan in the opening frame. Brodie Greene doubled to lead off the contest and he scored later in the frame on an RBI groundout by Stephen Hunt.
After Bakersfield added a run in the top of the third, Lancaster answered with three runs in the bottom fo the frame. Wates hit a sacrifice fly that plated Jay Austin and David Flores smacked a two-run double off the center field wall to put the JetHawks in front 3-2.
Bakersfield added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Donovan gave up a leadoff double to Mark Fleury and walked Chris Richburg. Following a sacrifice bunt from A.J. Means, Jose Gualdron hit a two-run double to give the Blaze a 4-3 edge.
Lancaster knotted the score at 4-4 when Wates belted a solo home run off Bakersfield starter Tim Crabbe in the bottom of the fifth.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when Austin hit an RBI single off Bakersifeld reliever Tzu-Kai Chiu (1-2) and Jio Mier and Wates each delivered RBI doubles. Kirk Clark (2-3) picked up his second win of the season despite giving up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth.
Lancaster improved to 4-10 in the second half and 32-52 overall. Bakersfield fell to 5-9 in the second half and 40-44 overall.
The JetHawks will try to make it two wins in a row when they open a four-game series against Ranch Cucamonga Thursday night at 7. Right-hander Jake Buchanan (5-4, 4.06 ERA) gets the start for Lancaster while the Quakes are expected to counter with right-hander Red Patterson (0-0, 3.46 ERA).
