Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - It has been a week of firsts for the Lancaster JetHawks. With a win in Rancho Cucamonga last night, the JetHawks locked up their first winning road trip of the 2009 season. Friday night at the Hangar, Leandro Cespedes and three relievers combined to pitch the JetHawks' first shutout of the year, as Lancaster rolled to a 4-0 win to open up their series with the Inland Empire 66ers.
On a calm night at the Hangar, a pitchers' duel broke out. The game was scoreless through seven innings. JetHawks starter Leandro Cespedes went six innings without giving up a run on just five hits. He struck out for and walked four. His 66ers counterpart, Mario Alvarez, was also strong. He went five scoreless, striking out six and walking two.
The JetHawks broke through in the seventh; ironically, on a night dominated by pitchers, it was a gaffe by a hurler that turned the game. With runners on first and second, David Flores tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Relief pitcher Zach Shreiber tried to get the lead runner at third, and threw the ball into left field. Flores ended up all the way at third, and the first two runs scored. Jordan Comadena then drove in his first run in affiliated pro baseball with a single to right; he scored when J.B. Shuck singled.
Comadena was a one-man defensive wrecking crew in the sixth inning. He fielded a bunt perfectly and got the lead runner at third base for the first out, then ended the inning with a strike-out-throw-out double play.
The newest JetHawk, Ashton Mowdy, pitched the seventh and got the win in his Lancaster debut. Shane Wolf retired two batters, then Jack Tilghman continued to thrive in his new role as the closer and got his third save in a week.
The JetHawks continue the homestand tomorrow against Inland Empire. They host the 66ers at 7:00 PM. The radio broadcast can be heard on Magic 1340 AM and online at www.JetHawks.com beginning at 6:45 PM.
