Jersey Express Sign Center Victor Sanders

East Orange, N.J. (Tuesday, October 20, 2009) - Staying true to their belief of developing local talent, the Jersey Express formally announced today that they have signed center Victor Sanders following his great showing at an open tryout this past Sunday. Sanders joined the Express when they started preseason training camp yesterday, and the team has now officially begun its preparation for its fifth season of play in the American Basketball Association.
"Big Vic will be a huge asset for us in the middle," Express head coach Quassim Austin said. "He'll help us be able to play both up-tempo and a half court brand of basketball. We've become even more versatile with Victor signing on."
Standing 6-7 and weighing 280 pounds, Sanders looks to be a force going against the rest of the ABA big men. He played his collegiate basketball at North Carolina State University, and he has also continued his career by playing international basketball in the Pro-Am League overseas. The mobile center has since returned to the region and stayed in shape by playing in the Branch Brook Park Basketball League.
"Victor has pro experience and has played overseas," Express President Marsha Blount commented. "He is our most experienced and the oldest player of our five-year history. Victor brings the toughness and experience we've needed at the center position. He is a true big-man that's going to give our opponents a tough time defending."
Also invited into veteran training camp from the last Express open tryout were Eric Wilkins, Philip Smith, Angelo Garcia and Dwayne Ailey, all of whom are fighting for one of the remaining roster spots on the team.
The Jersey Express is a member of the American Basketball Association and is currently preparing for their fifth season in the ABA. Quaasim Austin is the head coach of the Express with Cassandra Smith serving as his assistant coach, and the team will play their home schedule this year at East Orange Campus High School. The Express made the playoffs in each of their past two seasons and reached the ABA Elite Eight last year in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Express will open their 2009-10 season on Saturday, November 21st, when they host the New York City Thunder at 7:00 p.m. Season and opening night ticket tickets are available now, and they can be obtained through the team website at www.jerseyexpress.net. All Express home games will also be broadcasted live through the Newark Radio Series.
