Jersey Express Returning Jamie Sowers to Squad
August 28, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Jersey Express News Release
As we begin to creep even closer to the 2009-10 American Basketball Association season tip off, the Jersey Express officially announced today the return of Jamie Sowers. The shifty guard originally played for the Express during the 2005-06 season, and he looks to give the team another solid gunner to run the floor this year.
"Sowers is a very talented ball player," Express head coach Quaasim Austin commented. "He can play multiple positions from the block to the perimeter, which will cause match-up problems for teams trying to defend. He runs the floor well, finishes strong and defends."
Sowers, who has professional playing experience with the Express and the Brooklyn Kings of the United States Basketball League, will also play a key role in the development of some of the younger talent on the team this season.
"He will add veteran leadership and support to the young guys," Coach Austin continued. "Every time I see the roster building with this type of players, my heart pounds in anticipation of opening night."
Sowers stands 6-8 and grew up locally in Newark, New Jersey. He suited up in for Saint Peter's College in Jersey City before turning pro, and he also played in City Slam New York, a slam dunk contest televised on ESPN.
"Everything in my life has happened for a reason and purpose," Sowers stated after resigning with the Express. "I've walked away to find my way back to unfinished business. This time I'm ready." The Jersey Express is a member of the American Basketball Association and is currently preparing for their fifth season in the ABA. Quaasim Austin is the head coach of the Express with Cassandra Smith serving as his assistant coach, and the team will play their home schedule this year at East Orange Campus High School. The Express made the playoffs in each of their past two seasons and reached the ABA Elite Eight last year in Nashville, Tennessee. The team will open their 2009-10 season on Saturday, November 21st, when they host the New York City Thunder at 7:00 p.m. Season and opening night tickets are available now, and they can be obtained through the team website at www.jerseyexpress.net.
