KODAK, TENN. - The Diamond Jaxx (36-25) blast three homeruns and pull back within a ½ game of the Tennessee Smokies (37-25) with eight games to play in the first half. The win was in front of 5,782 fans at Smokies Park. Michael Pineda (7-1) won his league leading seventh game of the season and went six innings for the 10th time in 12 starts. Tennessee came back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game, but West Tenn plated two runs in the seventh inning to go back on top for good.
Carlos Triunfel was 2-for-3 with his second homerun of the series and three runs scored. Alex Liddi was also 2-for-3 with a homerun and four RBI Saturday night. Dustin Ackley finished the night 2-for-5. Matt Spencer led the way for the Smokies with a 3-for-5 night at the dish and an RBI.
Pineda earned the win by going six innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits. Pineda struck out three and walked one. Anthony Varvaro saved it for Pineda by working 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Craig Muschko (2-3) took the loss for Tennessee by allowing seven runs (five earned) in 6 1/3 innings.
Carlos Triunfel (5) broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the third, going deep for the second time in the series to make it 1-0 Diamond Jaxx. The homer for Triunfel was his fifth on the year.
Johan Limonta (7) extended the Jaxx lead to 2-0 with a leadoff solo homer in the top of the fourth. Limonta now has seven homers on the season, one more than in 2009.
The Smokies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Steve Clevenger, scoring Blake Lalli. A second run was thrown out at the plate on a great relay by the Jaxx.
Alex Liddi (6) belted his second three-run homerun of the series in the top of of the fifth inning to extend the Diamond Jaxx lead to 5-1. Alex now has six homeruns in 2010.
The Smokies again came back to tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Blake Lalli doubled home Ty Wright to make it 5-2, then with two outs Josh Vitters singled in a run and Tony Thomas plated two with single. The Smokies and Jaxx were tied at 5-5.
Carlos Peguero picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to give the D-Jaxx back the edge at 6-5. Then, Alex Liddi added his fourth RBI of the night with a single scoring Brandon Bantz to make it 7-5 Jaxx.
The Diamond Jaxx and Smokies will meet again on Sunday at Smokies Park, with first pitch at 4:00 pm CDT. RHP Steven Hensley (6-2, 1.83) takes the mound for the Jaxx while RHP Chris Carpenter (5-2, 3.45) takes the hill for the Tennessee Smokies.
