HANNIBAL, Mo. - For the second straight night, a dominant starting pitching performance helped the Chillicothe Paints (29-23), presented by Adena Health System, to a win - they beat the Hannibal Hoots (21-31) 6-1 Thursday night at Clemens Field.
Chillicothe spotted Hannibal the first run of the ballgame. Patrick Donahue hit a ball to shortstop and the throw went into the dugout, sending Donohue to second base. He went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Josh Lane and scored on a groundout by Dylan Dodd. Hannibal only got a runner to second base one more time all night, and never got to third.
The Paints started the second inning with a double from Trace Hatfield and he went to third when Wyatt Belinda struck out on a wild pitch and went to first. A second wild pitch plated Hatfield to tie the game and moved Belinda to second with no outs. He moved to third on a single by Drew DeVine and scored on a groundout by Dallas Hall. The Paints led 2-1 and didn't relinquish the lead.
Chillicothe went up 3-0 in the fourth. DeVine walked to lead off the inning, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a Dillon Dingler RBI double.
It was 4-0 after Hatfield hit his second double of the game with one out in the fifth. He went to third on a Belinda single and scored on a sacrifice from Dan McCauley.
Two more came home for the Paints in the eighth. Dan McCauley singled and went to second when Hall was hit by a pitch. Chad Roberts hit an RBI single to plate McCauley and then Hall scored on an error during the play to put the Paints up 6-1.
Michael Jacob (4-1) finished his strong outing when he walked a batter for the first time all night, it was the leadoff batter in the eighth inning. The left-hander surrendered just one hit and one walk over seven innings and struck out seven.
Ben Bulchik finished the last two innings with one walk and one strikeout. It marked the second consecutive night of Paints pitchers limiting the opponent to one hit on the night.
It was the fourth straight game with 10 or more hits for Chillicothe. Dingler, Hatfield, Belinda and McCauley each went two-for-four on the night. Hall, Roberts, Matt Hansen and DeVine added a hit a piece.
