Odessa Jackalopes News Release
Yesterday afternoon the Jacks traveled to the NYTEX Sports Centre to take on the Lone Star Brahmas. Odessa entered on a two-game win streak after sweeping the Corpus Christi IceRays. As for the Brahmas, they were coming off a weekend in which they secure three of four points against Shreveport. The season series was tied 2-2 and three of the four meetings between these two teams were decided by one goal.
In the opening period, Odessa got out to an early lead after Dayne Hoyord (10) scored a breakaway goal at the 4:25 mark. The Jacks would add to their lead after Cameron Dunn fed a pass to Michael Kadlecik (3) and he would wrist the puck past Arthur Smith. After letting up two goals on six shots, Smith was pulled and replaced by William Gramme. The Jacks wasted no time welcoming Gramme to the game as Justin Hughes (3) would find the back of the net to make it 3-0 Odessa. The score would hold for the remainder of the first period and the Jacks were outshooting the Brahmas 10-8.
The second period saw a combined eight goals in the 20-minute span. It started with Hughes (4) getting his second of the afternoon only 1:18 into the middle frame. A little over three minutes later, Hoyord (11) recorded his second of the game after spinning around with the puck in the slot and firing it past Gramme. The Jacks appeared to be in full control of the game as they were leading 5-0. However, the Brahmas were not going down without a fight. Lone Star was on the powerplay about seven minutes into the period and Ryan Comishock (9) redirected a shot past Greg Orosz. A minute later, Shane Carr (2) took a shot from the left circle that sailed past Orosz to put the Brahmas within three. Lone Star found themselves on the powerplay again later in the period and once again it was Comishock (10) converting on the man-advantage. Less than two minutes later, Odessa had just killed off another penalty, but Jason Karpa (3) scored before Odessa could get a fifth player into the zone. The Jackalopes' 5-0 lead quickly shrunk to a 5-4 lead. Luckily though, Odessa would find themselves on a 5-on-3 powerplay with under two minutes remaining in the period. Trevor Taulien (2) went from coast to coast and tucked it past Gramme to put Odessa up, 6-4. It marked the first time this season that Odessa scored two power-play goals in a game. Odessa kept the pressure on the following powerplay and after phenomenal puck movement, Tanyon Bajzer (18) easily tapped in the seventh goal of the game for the Jacks. That was the fourth goal scored by Odessa in the second period which set a season-high. The Brahmas were outshooting the Jacks, 24-22, through 40 minutes of play.
In the final period, Lone Star put Smith back in between the pipes. They also had a powerplay, and they would convert on it. Their fifth goal was scored by Comishock (11) and it marked his first career hat trick. It was also the first time this season that Lone Star scored three power-play goals in a game this season. The Jacks spent the rest of the period playing lockdown defense. Lone Star pulled Smith to send on an extra attacker in hopes of tying the game, but they were unsuccessful. Instead, Cameron Dunn (3) launched the puck down the ice and into the empty net with only 65 seconds remaining in the game. Not only did his goal put the game out of reach but it also marked the most goals Odessa has ever scored on Lone Star in a single game. The Jacks won the game, 8-5, and set a new season-high in goals too. They were outshot though, 38-26. Both teams went 3/7 on the powerplay.
That was the first time Odessa beat Lone Star in regulation since Dec. 18, 2020. Odessa is now eight points out of a playoff spot with 17 games remaining. Nine of them are against a team that is currently in a playoff spot. Head Coach Scott Deur had this to say following the win, "We wanted to come out fast and play hard and I thought we did a good job of that. In the third period, we played shutdown hockey the way that we should always be playing. Overall, I was happy with the way we played but I don't think I would have predicted a total of 13 goals to be scored." The Jacks will finish their seven-game road trip this weekend in El Paso with both games taking place at 8:00 p.m. CDT.
