Jacks Go Up, Fall Down at Acadiana, 14-8

July 30, 2015 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

Playing a potential playoff opponent, the the East Texas Pump Jacks let the Acadiana Cane Cutter slip away last night, losing 14-8 after taking control of the game early.

The Pump Jacks came out swinging to start the ballgame, and scored five runs in the first two innings.

Anthony Donovan and newcomer Mason Mallard hit back-to-back singles to open the game, and Weston Pitts dropped a perfect bunt to put Jacks at second and third. Both runners came in to score when Dylan Mecham jumped on the first pitch he saw and sent it into the gap for triple.

Tyler Moore pushed Mecham across with a single to make it 3-0, and the Jacks came back for more in the second inning.

Another new Pump Jack, Trevor Ezell, got the inning started with a single, then an error by Acadiana starter Scott Szush allowed Donovan to reach. A balk with Mallard at the plate advanced the runners to second and third, and Mallard laced a single that scored two for a 5-0 lead.

East Texas starter Mike Crimi took advantage of the early cushion, getting through the first two innings comfortably and preserving the Jacks' 5-0 lead. The Cane Cutters began to strike back in the third, touching Crimi for three runs on a walk and three consecutive doubles.

Crimi escaped the jam, but the Cutters came back for more the following inning. A leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt move a runner into scoring position, but two wild pitches allowed the runner to take third and finally scamper home from third.

With the score 5-4 and a runner on base, Ezell came on to pitch for Crimi, trying to stem the tide. But Ezell was a bit unlucky as well, allowed five-straight batters to reach base. A balk, three singles, and two walks helped Acadian score three more runs in the inning, and the Jacks went into the fifth down 7-5.

Szush held East Texas scoreless in the fifth, and departed the game after the Cutters scored another run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-5.

As they have all season long, the Pump Jacks hung around and battled.

In he seventh, Mecham led off with a single and Tristan Clarke blasted an RBI double to bring him home. An error by the second basemen allowed Clarke to take third, and James Lear lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring the Jacks back within a run.

Trailing 8-7 headed into the bottom of the seventh, Ezell ran into trouble once again. The Cane Cutters scored six runs on five hits to give themselves a healthy 14-7 lead with two innings left to play.

The Jacks did get a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double from Hunter Owens, but didn't have enough left in the tank to earn the series split.

Mecham finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, and has now picked up 11 RBI in his last eight games. Mallard went 3-for-6 with two RBI, and Moore had himself a multi-hit game. Ezell didn't have the pitching debut he wanted, but he did pick up a pair of base hits, a walk, and he scored a run.
