Jackals' Madera named "Star of Stars"

DURHAM, NC - PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has selected New Jersey Jackals DH/INF Sandy Madera as the league's "Star of Stars". This award is given annually by PA-Sportsticker to the player with the best overall statistical performance in their particular league.

Madera finished first in the Can-Am League in batting average (.364), extra base hits (44) and slugging percentage (.615), tied for first in home runs (21), second in hits (125) and RBI (75) and fifth in runs scored (69) and on-base percentage (.421). The Hyattsville, MD resident was a two-time Player of the Week (June 18-June 24 & August 27-September 2). Madera was both the June and August B45 Player of the Month and was named to the Postseason All-Star Team.

The 27-year-old Madera was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Oakland Athletics in February of 1998. He spent five seasons with the Athletics before being released in June of 2002. Madera has also played in the New York Yankees, Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles organizations.
