New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ -A night after a fantastic performance by Craig Heyer, the New Jersey Jackals were unable to keep the bats of the Wichita Wingnuts quiet for a second consecutive evening falling 10-5, Friday in Wichita.

After the Jackals had shutout Wichita for 11 and 2/3 innings, the Wingnuts exploded for three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

The inning began when Jackals starter Craig Bennigson hit leadoff man Ryan Khoury who came in to score the tying run on a RBI double into the gap off the bat of Jake Kahaulelio (3-for-4, 2 RBI). Next, John Rodriguez (2-for-5, 3RBI) cracked a two-run homer to deep center to give Wichita a 3-1 advantage.

After working in and out of trouble in the fourth, Bennigson couldn't get out of trouble in the fifth as Wichita tagged him for four more runs to extend their lead to 7-1.

Benningson went four-and-a-third innings allowing seven runs on seven hits; he's 0-2.

Offensively the Jackals were able to take the early lead in this game on an RBI single by Jose Cuevas in the top of the second. The RBI was Cuevas' team leading 12 RBI of the season.

New Jersey had chances to do some damage and get back into the game, but was either turned away by a nifty defensive gem, or a big time strikeout by Wingnuts' starter Junior Guerra. Guerra went seven innings scattering nine hits and allowing only one run to get to 2-0 on the season.

However in the eighth, New Jersey finally broke through with three unearned runs of off reliever Nick Walters to cut the Wingnuts lead in half, 8-4.

The inning started with a walk to Chris Duffy, who was put out at second on a Fielder's Choice to Nick Giarraputo. After a single by Yasanberty Arbelo, Jose Cuevas skied a pitch to center field, which caromed off the glove of Jared McDonald, allowing everyone to come in and score, including Cuevas.

But that was as close as New Jersey would come. The Wingnuts scratched out two insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth thanks to RBI's by Khoury (1-for-3, 3 runs scored, RBI), and Kahaulelio to make it 10-4.

Combined Khoury, Kahaulelio, Rodriguez, and C.J. Ziegler accounted for nine of the Wingnuts 10 runs on the evening.

The Jackals will look to David Filak (1-0) on Saturday night to get the rubber game of this three-game series, and close out a 10-game season opening road trip on a high note. Jackals pregame will be live at 7:50 with first pitch coming after 8:05 p.m. on Jackals.com.
