Odessa Jackalopes News Release
ODESSA, TX - It was a stark departure from the previous games the Jackalopes had played. This wasn't a close one that was decided by a critical goal in the third period. Instead it was a game that was mostly controlled by Lone Star as the Jackalopes (8-23-2-2) fell 4-0 to the Lone Star Brahmas (24-11-1-0) on Thursday night at the Ector County Coliseum. Friday marked just the fourth time this season, and second at home, that Odessa had been shut out.
It was a slow start that doomed the Jackalopes as the Brahmas were able to get on the board off a rebound just over seven minutes in the game. Out-shot 9-3 in the first, the Jackalopes offense never really got into rhythm, they were also hindered by the fact that Odessa was forced to kill of two penalties in the first period.
In the second, the Jackalopes had several quality scoring chances. The first came on a short-handed breakaway by Dayne Hoyord who sent a hard shot on net by was unable to cash in. The other was on a four-on-two rush while the Jackalopes were on the power play. The play was executed to perfection except the last cross-ice pass that ended up in the feet of Odessa forward Lucas Coon as opposed to his stick blade. These two "Grade A" chances would end up coming back to haunt the Jacks as it was Lone Star who scored twice in the second period. The first on a power-play goal and the second on a delayed penalty call.
Down 3-0 going into the third period, Odessa had another short-handed breakaway to Dayne Hoyord. But like the second period, Hoyord was stoned and another great chance for Odessa slipped by. Despite out-shooting Lone Star in the third, the Brahmas ended up tallying on a fourth goal with less than two minutes left.
The loss was certainly frustrating as it was something totally unexpected when coming into Thursday night, especially against two teams with bad blood who had played each other quite close in their previous encounters. Odessa ended the night 5/6 on the Penalty Kill, 0/3 on the power play and was out-shot 24-14.
Odessa will look to bounce back on Friday night for the second of the three-game series at the JackShack. Face-off is set for 7:15 pm.
