Isotopes' Jones Named Top PCL Hitter of the Week; Rainiers' Hernandez Top Pitcher

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Pacific Coast League today announced Mitch Jones of the Albuquerque Isotopes the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week and Gaby Hernandez of the Tacoma Rainiers the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for August 31- September 7. Jones and Hernandez are the final PCL weekly award winners for the 2009 season.
Jones helped the Isotopes earn a spot in the 2009 PCL playoffs, their first trip to the playoffs since 2003. The right-handed slugger hit .297 with a league-leading 35 home runs and 106 RBI, which was good for second in the PCL. He played in eight games for the Dodgers in 2009 and hit .308 with one double and one run scored. The outfielder was originally drafted by the New York Yankees out of Arizona State University in the seventh round of the 2000 MLB draft. Jones was selected as the designated hitter on the 2009 All-PCL team last week.
Hernandez helped the Rainiers clinch a spot in the 2009 PCL playoffs in the final game of the season. The right-hander got the start in a must win game against Colorado Springs on Monday afternoon. Needing a win for the PCL Pacific Northern Division title, he went six innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits to help Tacoma clinch their first playoff berth since 2005. He finished the season with a team leading ten wins and a 5.23 ERA. A native of Miami, Hernandez was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 3rd round of the 2004 MLB draft.
