Harrisburg, PA â The Harrisburg City Islanders announced on Tuesday that Mark Pulisic and Steve Widdowson have joined the club as Assistant Coaches. The team has also named Mike Corney Director of Scouting.
The trio will be on hand this weekend, Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7, as the team holds its second round of open tryouts at Harrisburg High School.
"We are very fortunate to bring these three into the fold," said Head Coach Bill Becher. "They all bring experience, commitment, and an understanding of what it takes to build a successful organization."
Pulisic has consistently earned accolades since becoming the Head Men's Soccer Coach at Lebanon Valley College in 1993. In 1996, he also became the first Head Coach of the Women's Soccer Program at LVC. He was named the Commonwealth Conference Men's Soccer Coach of the Year in 2000, and earned Women's Coach of the Year honors in 2001 and 2003.
A graduate of George Mason University, Pulisic played eight seasons (1991-99) for the Harrisburg Heat of the National Professional Soccer League, and ranks among the franchise's all-time leader in games played (303, second), goals (296, second), points (689, second), power play goals (40, first), and game-winning goals (23, second). He was an All-Rookie selection in 1991-92, and was named an All-Star in 1997. Pulisic was inducted into the Heat Hall of Fame on October 30, 1999.
Widdowson, who hails from England, currently serves as the Assistant Coach for the York College Men's Soccer Team. Before moving to York, he held the role of Head Coach at Centenary College (Hacketstown, NJ). Widdowson also acts as the Coaching Director for the Metro Soccer Club of York.
Widdowson played professionally for the Reading Rage (now of the USL's Premier Development League), and graduated from Rutgers University where he is still among the school's all-time leaders in saves (303, second), shutouts (19, second), and games in goal (67, third).
Corney, a graduate of Lock Haven University, has coached soccer in the Central Pennsylvania area for over a decade. He was part of Bob Lilley's coaching staff with the Hershey Wildcats of the A-League.
The Harrisburg City Islanders will open their inaugural season in the Pro Soccer League (PSL), a division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), on Saturday, April 17, with a road game against Northern Virginia. The Islanders will also travel to Charlotte on Friday, April 30, and Wilmington on Saturday, May 1, before playing their first home game at the Skyline Sports Complex against the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, May 8.
