Isaiah Yates Named Appy League Hitter of the Week
August 27, 2013 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release
Pulaski Mariners outfielder Isaiah Yates took home honors as the Appy League Hitter of the Week (Aug. 19-25). Yates is the second consecutive Mariners outfielder to take home Hitter of the Week honors in the Appy League. Last week, Jesus Ugueto was the recipient.
In five games, Yates went 9-for-22 (.409) with seven extra-base hits. He opened the week on Aug. 19 with a 1-for-5, four-strikeout game in Bluefield, but turned it on when Pulaski returned home Thursday. He went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored, one RBI, and two stolen bases in the series opener against Elizabethton.
However, Friday night in the Mariners' 3-2 11-inning win, Yates went a staggering 0-for-5 with five strikeouts. In fact, Yates struck out in his final at-bat Thursday, struck out all five times Friday, and opened Saturday's finale against the Twins with yet another strikeout.
That didn't deter the 18-year-old out of Clovis, California. Yates - a 17th-round Draft pick of Seattle in the 2012 June Amateur Draft - finished Saturday's game on a terror. He hit a 2-run homer to put Pulaski on top momentarily, 5-4. He followed that with a double in the fifth but saw his team fall behind by one run again, 6-5.
Yates made sure Pulaski would get a win on manager Chris Prieto's birthday.
He hit a towering 2-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Mariners a 7-6 lead that held up.
Yates added icing on the cake in Pulaski's 15-0 rout of Kingsport Sunday. He filled up the box score, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, three runs scored, one RBI, and two walks for good measure.
After Yates failed to put the ball in play in seven straight at-bats, he then reached in seven straight at-bats on his two homers, one triple, two doubles, and two walks.
The M's outfielder has enjoyed hitting in the confines of Calfee Park. He has a .324/.418/.571 triple-slash line in 28 games at Calfee Park, including three home runs and 24 RBIs.
In 46 games, Yates is hitting .278 with 12 doubles, three triples, four homers, and 28 RBIs. He's also scored 25 runs and has swiped 10 stolen bases in 14 tries.
