New Jersey Ironmen News Release

NEWARK, NJ- The New Jersey Ironmen (10-5) captured the tenth win of their inaugural season today in a Saturday afternoon contest with the California Cougars (7-8). The match up was the third of a four game home stand for the Ironmen, their longest stay at Prudential Center this year. The midday contest was highlighted by a seven-point performance from Goran Vasic and a hat trick by Brazilian Freddy Moojen.

Moojen netted the first points of the afternoon at 2:11 of the opening frame when he scored a ball from defender Ryan Johnson on the right wing, giving New Jersey an early 2-0 advantage. California evened the count at two apiece on a goal by forward Naldo at 9:18.

At 1:41 of the second stanza, Moojen finished off a feed from MISL assist leader Vasic to give the home team a 4-2 lead. The Vasic assist was his 575th career point. The Cougars then knotted up the score, 4-4, following a Craig Scheer to Enrique Tovar goal at 8:04. Vasic helped to put his club back up at the 9:52 mark when he gave a restart ball to forward Mauricio Salles, and a defense-splitting pass from Shaun David to Dizzy Antoniuk a mere 22 seconds later extended the Ironmen advantage to 8-4. California then struck with a pair of late first half goals (3,2) to take the lead into halftime, 9-8.

Vasic picked up his third assist of the contest at 7:20 when he hooked up Dizzy Antoniuk for his second goal, but Matt Caution answered for the Cougars to put his team back on top, 11-10. Vasic followed that goal up with an unassisted three-point tally, but Scheer quickly responded with a three-pointer of his own for California to again give the visitors the advantage, 14-13. Moojen finished out the third quarter by hitting the third knock of a hat trick off a feed from Vasic, and New Jersey took a 15-14 lead into the final stanza.

At 9:13 of the fourth period, Lazo Alavanja hooked up Salles for a power play goal, stretching the gap to 17-14 in favor of the hometown Ironmen. The New Jersey defense then held strong to strong to finish out the victory.

Vasic headlined the stat sheet with seven points on a three-point goal and four assists. He is now just two helpers short of 225 for his career. The three goals from Moojen gave him his second hat trick of the season, and goalkeeper Tony Meola picked up his eighth win of the season.

The Ironmen next host La Raza de Monterrey on Friday at Prudential Center. Kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets by calling 1-800-IRONMEN.
