Ironmen Drop 21-13 Decision To Ignition

Newark, N.J. (Wednesday, February 18, 2009) - The New Jersey Ironmen (4-7) were unable to defend their home turf today, suffering a 21-13 defeat to the first-place Detroit Ignition (7-3) at Prudential Center. The Ironmen have no time to reflect on their loss as they will host the Chicago Storm (3-7) tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
This game opened with a flurry of goals, as an early 39-second span in the first frame saw a total of three knocks hit the back of the net. Detroit jumped to a 4-0 advantage after notches by midfielder Kyt Selaidopoulos at 2:25 and midfielder Ryan Mack at 2:51, but New Jersey got on the board at 3:04 thanks to a tally by former Cuban National Team defender Rey Martinez, which was set up at the top of the key by midfielder Chile Farias. Due to good ball movement by the Ironmen, a fast break opportunity was created on the right flank at 10:01, resulting in an equalizing Randi Patterson score off a feed by forward Adauto Neto. Patterson, who led Bergen Catholic High School to a 1999 New Jersey state championship, has now registered a goal in all three contests he has played since joining the East Coast representatives of the XSL via a trade with the Chicago Storm in late January.
At 5:07 of the second quarter, Serbian midfielder Goran Vasic showed his field vision by finding a wide-open Tiguinho on the left wing, and the Brazilian striker pounded the ball home to give New Jersey their first lead of the morning, 6-4. The Ignition then stopped the offensive run of the host Ironmen by recording seven consecutive points to finish the first half with an 11-6 advantage.
The third quarter started with a pair of Detroit goals before a Patterson to Farias notch finally ended the Ignition nine-point run at 7:50, closing the gap to 15-8 in favor of the visiting club. New Jersey then brought themselves within five points, 15-10, after a Vasic restart resulted in a Farias to Martinez two-pointer at 14:33.
After a Selaidopoulos goal made it 17-10, Farias pounded a restart triple past Detroit goalkeeper Danny Waltman at 7:54 to edge the Ironmen back into it at 17-13, but they would not get any closer.
New Jersey now falls to 4-7 and will return to Prudential Center tomorrow night for a 7:30 kickoff against the Chicago Storm. Tickets are available by calling 1-800-IRONMEN.
