Ironmen Announce Fair Gama Italian All-Star Exhibition
NEWARK, NJ- The New Jersey Ironmen, in conjunction with Fair Gama International, announce today that former Italian National Team players Gigi Di Biagio, Giuseppe Signori and Angelo Peruzzi will headline an Italian All-Star Exhibition at Prudential Center. The friendly contest will be played on Friday, April 4, following the Ironmen regular season finale against the Baltimore Blast. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorship will benefit youth charities in the tri-state area. "Bringing an event of this caliber to New Jersey is not only very exciting, but it is also very rewarding in knowing that it is being done for a good cause," Ironmen General Manager Tony Novo stated.
Fair Gama is a non-profit organization dedicated to fair play and sportsmanship. Fair Gama uses world class athletes in various sports to promote important social values and issues, especially those that impact children.
Immediately following the conclusion of the Ironmen match against Baltimore, a special "Lights Out Phos-Soccer" demonstration will be conducted (Phos is Greek for torch). This will be the first known glow-in-the-dark soccer game.
Di Biagio is a midfielder who has enjoyed a 20-year professional career, most recently with Italian club, Ascoli. He also earned 31 caps with the Italian National Team and netted a pair of goals on the international stage. He was a member of two World Cup teams in 1998 and 2000.
Signori, one of the top scorers in Serie A history, registered 243 total goals in 569 games over his 22-year career. The powerful left-footer led Serie A in goals scored on three separate occasions (1993, 1994, 1996), and his 188 tallies in Italy's top division are good enough for seventh on the all-time record list. He recorded seven goals in 28 games with the Italian National Team, and he set up a pair of critical goals in the 1994 World Cup.
Peruzzi is a former Italian National Team goalkeeper that was a member of the 2006 World Cup championship squad. He made 509 appearances in net over his 21-year career, recording 31 caps with the national team. While backstopping Italian club Juventus in the 1990s, he was a winner of the 1996 Champions League title and three Scudetti. Scudetto is an Italian word meaning small shield, and Scudetti are symbols worn on the jersey of the team that has won the Serie A title from the previous season.
The three Italian stars, along with representatives from the Ironmen, will also be ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ in Times Square this upcoming Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
