Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Iron announced today that it has signed former CFL and af2 quarterback Darnell Kennedy and defensive back Carlton Brown to its roster. Kennedy played last season with South Georgia of the af2 after spending six seasons in the CFL, while Brown comes to the Iron defense after leading the Manchester Wolves in interceptions in 2008.
DARNELL KENNEDY, QB, 6'1", 190, ALABAMA STATE
Kennedy, 31, comes to the Iron after spending last season as the starting quarterback for the South Georgia Wildcats of the af2. Kennedy was named the af2's Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week twice in three weeks last season and started in all 16 games for the Wildcats in his rookie season. On the year, Kennedy threw for 3,845 yards on a completion percentage of 58.7 (277-for-472), 81 touchdowns and a passer rating of 114.80. Kennedy threw at least five touchdowns in 11 games and had a 100.0-passer-rating-or-higher in 13 games. In addition to his passing game, Kennedy stumped opposing offenses with his rushing game as he tallied 230 yards and 21 touchdowns on 63 carries.
To begin his professional career Kennedy spent six seasons with three different CFL teams. In 2002, he spent his rookie CFL seasons with the Calgary Stampeders as a third-string quarterback. In 2003 he played one game with Calgary and was traded to the Ottawa Renegades for the rest of the season as a backup. Kennedy saw his first consistent playing time in 2004 when he played in 16 games, starting four, with Ottawa, throwing for 893 yards and five touchdowns. After spending 2005 with Ottawa, Kennedy played two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2008, Kennedy spent time in the AIFA with the Huntington Heroes where he played 11 games, throwing for 1,900 yards and 35 touchdowns on 146-for-302 passing.
Kennedy drew the attention of scouts everywhere when he was named the starting quarterback at Alabama State as a freshman. During his five seasons, he broke several school records and drew comparisons to 2003 NFL MVP QB Steve McNair. As a senior, he was named the Division I-AA Player of the Year as well as the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, throwing 33 touchdowns and totaling a school-record 3,618 combined passing and rushing yards. In five seasons Kennedy completed 859 passes for 11,753 yards and 102 touchdowns for the Hornets.
CARLTON BROWN, DB, 5'10", 185, JACKSON STATE
Brown, 24, led the Manchester Wolves of the af2 in interceptions in 2008 with five and added 31 tackles, six pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He also returned 32 kickoffs for 572 yards and one touchdown. Prior to his play with the Wolves, Brown was a member of the Utah Blaze of the AFL in 2008 where he recorded 8.5 tackles and one pass breakup in three games before being waived. In 2009, Brown looked to be the leader of a defense but left the Wolves to play for the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL. Brown was later cut by Hamilton and was activated from other league exempt by Manchester for the final two games of the season.
A native of Grenada, MS, Brown attended Jackson State University where he played football for four seasons. His senior season Brown was named the team's Most Valuable Player as well as First-Team All-SWAC after making 27 tackles, seven pass breakups and five interceptions. In 2007, Brown was invited to play in the Magnolia Gridiron Classic, an innovative game concept that allows prospects from Division I-A programs to participate in a contest against a small school roster comprised of Division I-AA and Division II players in order to impress NFL scouts.
