Topeka Pilots News Release
TOPEKA, KS: When the RoadRunners played their final season in Santa Fe, only one player that year played in all 67 regular and postseason games: Jason Krispel. He will bring that reliability with him when he comes to Topeka in two weeks for the First Annual RoadRunner Alumni Game.
It wasn't that long ago that if a player grew up playing hockey in California, he would be hardly given a second look by scouts. That stigma has certainly melted away. Krispel played roller hockey in Cypress, CA before switching to ice. He joined the NAHL Bozeman ICEDOGS in 2005-06 and enjoyed a solid season, as his team advanced to the Robertson Cup Championship Game, losing 4-2 to Texas after a 48-9-1 season. Though the ICEDOGS franchise made money, the arena did not, and the Valley Ice Garden was sold and converted to a beer warehouse leaving the team without a home. As the team elected to join the Junior B NorPac league, all the ICEDOGS were essentially free agents. Krispel, along with fellow ICEDOGS Cody Omilusik and Adam Krefski chose to play in Santa Fe.
"Krispy has tremendous hands and excellent vision", said head coach Scott Langer. "He was a phenomenal setup man with a good head on his shoulders and that made him perfect for penalty kill and power play situations." His play in Santa Fe (21 goals and 38 assists) earned him a college deal with the University of Connecticut Huskies, where he joined another former RoadRunner B.J. Bayers. Acknowledged by Langer for having an "energetic personality", Krispel is expected add spark to the Alumni roster.
