Milwaukee Mustangs News Release

The Milwaukee Iron remained perfect at home on the season beating their neighbors to the south, the Chicago Rush, 71-48 Friday night at the Bradley Center in front of a crowd of 5,386.

On the opening drive for the Rush it took a fourth down strike from quarterback Russ Michna to a wide open Kenny Higgins as the Iron defense could not hold.

Milwaukee would only need one play on their opening drive, getting a deep pass from quarterback Chris Greisen to wide receiver Nate Forse. The play went for 38 yards, and put the Iron up 7-6 early in the game.

The Rush dove deep into the playbook on their next drive using a pitch back to Flowers and then going deep to tight end Robert Boss for six.

A stingy Rush defense held the Iron at the one on a fourth down play to take possession and control of the game. Scoring on the resulting drive, the Rush looked to put a dent in the Iron home record early going up 20-7.

The Iron offense would not go away that easily. Greisen, who finished the night with 339 yards and five touchdowns, hooked up with Tiger Jones for a 28 yard touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Iron kicker Robert Forstrom drew iron as he nailed the kick off the end zone crossbar. Tyre Young jumped on the ball and recovered it for Milwaukee.

After an incomplete pass, Young bruised his way into the end zone to tie the game at 20. Young would tie the ball game again on the next possession with less than two minutes left in the half making it a 27-27 ball game. The Iron defense would hold going into halftime leaving the score tied.

Head coach Bob Landsee's half time speech must have been one for the ages, as Milwaukee came out of the locker room on fire. Needing just two plays out of the half, it was Greisen to Forse for the score, putting the Iron up 34-27. Forse finished the night with a game-high 171 yards and three touchdowns on 10 receptions.

The Forse score was the start of a wild third quarter for Milwaukee in which they scored a season-high 34 points in one quarter. On the ensuing kickoff it was defensive back Virgil Gray striping the ball to force the fumble at the 12 yard line while Carlton Brown fell on it. Milwaukee was forced to try a Forstrom field goal which got blocked.

Two plays later linebacker Marcus Everett intercepted a Michna pass at the six yard line and took it into the end zone. On the following kickoff Young stripped the ball and Forse scooped it in the end zone for the score.

Already a miserable start to the second half for the Rush, Everett decided to make it even worse. Sealing the game with an amazing 46-yard one-handed interception for a touchdown, Everett put the Iron up 54-27.

Not done yet in the quarter, Forse added a score to make it a 34 point third quarter and a 61-34 lead heading into the final quarter. With the game in hand it was just a matter of waiting out the clock as Milwaukee cruised to a easy home victory over the Rush. The win over the Rush puts Milwaukee in sole possession of first place in the North division at 4-1 on the season.

Next Friday the Iron will take on the Utah Blaze at 7pm and try to preserve their perfect home record. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network as the Game of the Week.
