The Birmingham Iron defense pitched the Alliance of American Football's first ever shutout, and Trent Richardson ran in a pair of touchdowns in a 26-0 victory over the Memphis Express before 17,039 Sunday afternoon in pro football's return to Legion Field.
Kept in check most of the day, Richardson scored on runs of four and five yards in the second half and also added a two-point conversion.
Birmingham quarterback Luis Perez went 19-of-33 for 252 yards, with Patton Quinton on the receiving end of four balls for 107 yards.
Iron kicker Nick Novak provided all the scoring in the first half, connecting on three field goals as Birmingham built a 9-0 lead at the break. Novak added another successful kick in the second half.
Memphis quarterback Christian Hackenburg completed just 10 of 23 attempts for 87 yards with an interception. Brandon Silvers replaced him late in the game and promptly threw an interception. Eleven penalties for 97 yards further slowed the Express.
