Amarillo Venom News Release

Amarillo, TX - When you thought the Amarillo Dusters could not be heartbroken anymore this season, it happened again, falling by one point to the Iowa Barnstormers 55-54 Saturday night.

The first quarter featured scoring for both teams on each of their opening-period possessions. Amarillo would have wide receiver XAVIER HAIR and newly acquired man Carl Johnson catching touchdown grabs, while Iowa quarterback BRIAN VILLANUEVA would earn a rushing touchdown and two passing touchdown throws to begin his hot streak. J.J. PAYNE would also earn his third rushing touchdown of the season. End of the first Iowa led 21-12.

During the second quarter, Amarillo would only strike once, as quarterback JULIAN REESE would earn his first rushing touchdown of the game. Following the score, Iowa wide receiver DUSTY KAIN along with ERRICK MCCOWN each scored their first touchdowns of the game. Amarillo's new kicker SINISHA VRVILIO missed a 24-yard field goal to end the first half. The halftime score, Iowa led 35-19.

However, the Dusters would begin their comeback, as newly activated defensive back KENDRICK WALKER took the opening kickoff for a score, while linebacker JOHN KING intercepted a Brian Villanueva pass that would lead to another Duster touchdown that would tie the game at 35 with 7:24 remaining in the third. Iowa quarterback Brian Villanueva would add the lone Iowa score of the quarter to give Iowa the 42-35 lead.

In the final quarter of play, the Dusters would find themselves down by seven with one minute remaining. Methodically moving their way down the field, Amarillo's DUVAUGHN FLAGLER would make a one-handed touchdown grab with no more time remaining in regulation. For the second-straight week, Dusters Head Coach Ben Bennett elected to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Julian Reese stepped back to throw and did not have any options in the endzone. Reese chose to run, but was foiled at the Iowa one yard line by Iowa defensive lineman MIKE MATTHES. The Dusters fell 55-54.

Amarillo (2-10) will hit the road this Saturday, July 4th at 7pm to take on the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings.
