DUSTIN FOWLER & JOSE BERRIOS HONORED AS INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The International League announced today that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre outfielder Dustin Fowler and Rochester right-hander Jose Berrios have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 24-30. Berrios becomes this season's first two-time recipient (April 6-9) and has now claimed three Pitcher of the Week awards since mid-2016. Fowler is the first member of the RailRiders to be so honored this season.
DUSTIN FOWLER, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Dustin Fowler hit .423 over the past week and led the International League with seven extra-base hits, 24 total bases, and two triples. He also made history Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game home series against Indianapolis. Fowler tripled and scored in the 1st inning, hit a RBI double in the 5th, then added a single in the 7th . Another double in the 9th helped SWB tie the game, leading to a dramatic walk-off solo home run in the 11th inning to complete his cycle and defeat the Indians 7-6. Fowler is now tied for the League-lead this season in both triples (3) and extra-base hits (12), while he's also tied for 2nd in total bases (47) and is 4th in slugging percentage (.573).
22-year-old Dustin Fowler is in his fifth season in the Yankees organization since being selected in the 18th round of the 2013 draft. Widely considered to be among the system's top prospects, Fowler leads all Yankees minor leaguers in RBI since 2015. After an All-Star campaign with Double-A Trenton in 2016, he is now playing in his first season at the Triple-A level. Fowler is a native of Caldwell, Georgia.
JOSE BERRIOS, Rochester Red Wings IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Red Wings' right-hander Jose Berrios continued his domination of IL hitters this week, leading the circuit with 14.0 innings pitched and 17 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run to lower his ERA on the year to 1.09. On Tuesday Berrios didn't factor in the decision after an impressive duel with Gwinnett's Sean Newcomb, going 6.0 frames with a season-high ten punchouts in a game Rochester won via late-inning heroics. He followed that effort with arguably his most dominant performance of the season on Sunday against Louisville, surrendering just two hits and two walks over 8.0 innings of scoreless pitching. Rochester prevailed 5-1, giving Berrios his second win of the season. In addition to being among the top three in the IL in ERA for 2017, he also leads the League in innings pitched (33.0) and is tied for 2nd in strikeouts (35).
22-year-old Jose Berrios is in his sixth season as a professional pitcher since being selected by Minnesota in the 1st round of the 2012 draft. Since joining the Red Wings in 2015, he's posted an 18-8 record with a 2.54 ERA in 35 Triple-A starts. He got his first taste of the big leagues in 2016, making 14 starts for the Twins as a rookie. Berrios is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
