Injuries continue to mount, Velez added to injured reserve list

February 4, 2008 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) - California Cougars News Release

Stockton, CA - Feb. 4, 2008 - The California Cougars, of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), announce today the placement of Eduardo Velez on the team's injured reserve list. Velez suffered a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament during Thursday's match against La Raza de Monterrey. He will miss the remainder of the season.

Velez's injury is a partial tear. However, it is enough of a compromise, according to Cougars' trainer Dr. Ed LeCara, that it will need surgery and requires 12 months of rehabilitation.

Velez joins Vicente Figueroa and Brian Farber on the Cougars' injured reserve list. Thirteen different Cougars players have been listed on the team's injury report over the first 18 games of the year. Six players have missed three or more games this season due to injuries. Five players (Antonio Sutton, Ryan Hall, Chris Handsor, Figueroa and Farber) have missed five or more games. Only Craig Scheer, Matt Caution and Evan McNeley have played in all 18 games this season. All three players (Scheer, Caution and McNeley) have been listed as probable before a game this season.

Velez's injury occurred when he hurled himself toward a ball along the sideline boards near the referee crease at Arena Monterrey. His knee collided with the wall while trying to dig the ball from the sideline. Velez immediately dropped to the turf and held his left knee after the collision. He was carried off the field by Dr. LeCara. Velez did return to the playing field just a few minutes later and scored the first goal of the match for California in the third quarter.
