Columbia Stingers News Release
Columbia, SC, February 14, 2007-Today the Columbia Stingers, the new arena football team signed former Gamecock and New York Giant, Corey Miller as their head coach.
"I am very exited. I had actually been praying about a coaching job and this just happened to find me," said Miller.
Miller played with the USC Gamecocks from 1987 to 1990 as a linebacker. He was drafted by the New York Giants in 1991 and played eight years with them until 1998. In 1999 he played with Minnesota, Vikings for one year until 2000 when he returned to Columbia.
Miller is now a pastor for a church he started called the Giants for Christ Ministries located in Northeast Columbia.
"I want to bring ministry into my coaching because it will help the players with all the bumps and bruises along the way. I want to affect and impact these players to help them get to the level I played at with the Giants," replied Miller.
Miller was also impressed with the charitable work that the Columbia Stingers will be doing in the community. The football team will make a difference in this city by taking their players and coaches to visit sick children in the hospital, donating $200,000 to $400,000 from their patented Sports for Education program and working with various church organizations.
"I really like the idea of this team's involvement with charitable work since it is an essential part of my ministry," said Miller.
Miller believes the team will be very successful since Columbia is such a football town. Since Gamecock football is on hiatus until the fall, it will give the city another sporting event to watch.
Team President, Tony Pewonski said he was also very excited to have Miller as the Stingers head coach since he is a known athlete in the Columbia area.
"I think Corey is an upstanding man and he will be a great attribute to our team. He known around this town as a good moral citizen, which is what we want portrayed by our coaches and players," said Pewonski.
The team will be conducting their last tryout this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Polo Road Park. Some players have already signed on to play with the Stingers, but this will be the last tryout to find the best talent in the area to make up their 30-player roster.
Miller will be at this tryout hand selecting the top players that will help take the team to a championship win. It will be open to the public and all interested football athletes are encouraged to come tryout for the team.
The Columbia Stingers will have their first home game on March 17th at 7:00 p.m. at the Colonial Center. Their regular playing season will finish at the end June with playoffs starting at the end July.
