Indoor Football League Week 9 Preview

Published on May 5, 2009 under Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

FRIDAY, MAY 8 - MARYLAND MANIACS (4-2) @ SAGINAW STING (3-5), 7:05 PM

The Week 9 opener is an inter-division battle between the Maniacs and the Sting. After starting off the season 0-2, the Maniacs have rattled off four consecutive wins. Last week against Rochester, WR Roderick Bryant hauled in two touchdown passes, and finished the night catching six passes for 76 yards.

Saginaw returns home after three straight weeks of road contests and are looking to get back to their winning ways. Dangerous WR Robert Height has found the endzone a combined ten times so far this season. Four on the ground, five receiving, and one Kickoff return.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 - ABILENE RUFF RIDERS (3-2) @ EL PASO GENERALS (4-1), 7:00 PM

The Ruff Riders and Generals, meet in El Paso for a battle of Lonestar Division Supremacy. Abilene is coming off a crushing defeat at the hands of Wichita last week, and it won't get any easier against a tough General offense. Joey Longoria thinks he is up to the task, as the DB leads the IFL in interceptions with six .

The Generals are riding a three game winning streak into this game because of the strength of their passing game. The combination of QB Tommy Jones to WR Deangelo Woodie has quickly become one of the most feared in the entire league. Woodie has hauled in 12 Jones TD passes this season.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 - FAIRBANKS GRIZZLIES (3-3) @ COLORADO ICE (3-3), 7:00 PM

The winner of this game between the Grizzlies and Ice will be sitting all alone in second place in the Pacific Division. Fairbanks looks to avenge an earlier season loss suffered at the hands of the Ice. QB Justin Rummell has a nice target in WR Lonnie Sanders, who leads the IFL in receiving yards so far this season with 509 to go along with his 13 touchdowns.

After three wins in a row, the Ice suffered a heartbreaking setback in the final second against Omaha last week. The Colorado defense is still allowing less then 40 points/gm. Imposing DB Quentin Womack is amongst the league leaders in tackles averaging more then six stops per contest.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 - WICHITA WILD (2-4) @ SAN ANGELO STAMPEDE EXPRESS (2-2), 7:05 PM

The Wild make the trip to Texas this week to face a tough Stampede Express team. The Wild have won some big games this season, however still find themselves south of .500. Last week against Abilene, QB Alex Melugin had his best game of the year completing 21 of 32 passes and four touchdowns. WR Clinton Solomon hauled in nearly 100 yards worth of passes and 2 TD's.

The Stampede Express have cooled off a bit after beginning the season 2-0. Their offense will need to get back on track to add to their win column. Tarvar Williams is a player who could put this team on his back. The receiver averages six catches per game and almost 15 yards per catch.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 - MUSKEGON THUNDER (1-6) @ SIOUX FALLS STORM (1-6), 7:05 PM

The Thunder are riding high after their first win of the season, but must now face the always dangerous Storm. Muskegon may want to think about lining up as many field goal tries as possible after last weeks performance. K Scott Greene was 7-8 on field goal attempts last week and accounted for 23 of his teams 34 points in their win over Saginaw.

Sioux Falls is coming off their bye looking to make their 2nd half playoff run. The Storm offense can best be categorized as balanced. QB Terrance Bryant has had the luxury of finding a wide-open James Terry or handing it off to RB Sean Treasure who both can take the ball for six at any time.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 - ALASKA WILD (0-5) @ BILLINGS OUTLAWS (6-1), 7:05 PM

Alaska invades Billings looking for their first victory fo the season. If the Wild want to have a chance in this game they need to get the ball in the hands of their stars. RB Paul Mosley has found pay dirt eight times in five games while KR Demarcus James has already returned 4 kickoffs for touchdowns this season and is among the league leaders in All-Purpose yards.

The Outlaws continue to be the number one ranked scoring offense in the IFL. The combined rushing attack of QB Chris Dixon, and backs Charles Anthony and Timothy Brown average over 100 yards on the ground per game. WR James Walton leads the IFL in TD receptions with 17.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 - CORPUS CHRISTI HAMMERHEADS (1-4) @ ODESSA ROUGHNECKS (1-4), 7:11 PM

The Hammerheads and Roughnecks know each other well, after playing each other last week. Odessa squeaked out a win 47-44, but Corpus is hoping for a little revenge. DB's Jason Lee and Wali Munin have combined for four interceptions through five games and look to take away Roughneck Quarterback Dennis Gile's passing lanes.

Odessa added their first notch on the win column by taking out this same Hammerheads team last week on the road. WR Jimmy Conner is second in the league in All-Purpose yards, with over 160 per game. He will need to continue being the Do-It-All player he is to start a Roughnecks winning streak.

SATURDAY, MAY 9 -BLOOMINGTON EXTREME (5-3) @ RIVERCITY RAGE (6-1), 7:30 PM

Bloomington heads to Rivercity for the IFL Game of the Week . The Extreme dismantled Alaska last week and is poised for their biggest test of the season. QB Mitch Tanney is lighting up the stat sheet this season, and leads the IFL in passing yards with 1,325.

The Rage will be going for their fourth win in a row, all of which have been on home turf. Like Bloomington, Rivercity has a star Quarterback of their own in Dixie Wooten. The gun slinger has an unbelievable 33 -2 touchdown to interception ratio through the teams first seven games and has averaged 191 yards passing per game.
