Indoor Football Alliance Announces Partnership With Wegener Safety Latch

August 26, 2015 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) News Release

FAYETTEVILLE,NC (AUG26,2015) - Indoor Football Alliance (IFA) will be issuing all players in Supreme Indoor Football and the Continental Indoor Football League a new helmet safety device during the 2016 indoor football season. The Wegener Safety Latch is a mechanism that replaces the snap system on the helmet and prevents the chinstrap from disengaging; this new product has shown to virtually eliminate helmet loss during play.

The Indoor Football Alliance and its members the SIF and CIFL are thrilled to have partnered with the Wegener Safety Latch to provide one of the latest safety devices in the industry to 100% of its players. Barbara Spinger (Indoor Football Alliance CEO) "Wherever possible the alliance needs to provide access to the best possible safety equipment for our players to help prevent the possibility of injury. This is just one of the great products available to teams in the alliance with many more to come. We look forward to a great working relationship with Wegener Safety Latch for many years to come".

Under an agreement between the parties every players helmet will outfitted to include the Wegener Safety Latch during 2016 season, information will then be compiled by the alliance and at the completion of the season statistics and video will be sent to Wegener Safety Latch for evaluation.

Jim Wegener is the inventor and founder of the Wegener Safety Latch. He has enjoyed two remarkable careers, one as a trained electrical engineer, where his team at Goodyear Aerospace developed the side-looking radar system which mapped the surface of the moon for NASA. Being the people person that he is, and after many years with the Bigfork QRU, he later became a registered nurse. He worked in the emergency room at a level 1 trauma center for 20 years and witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of traumatic brain injury plus numerous football injuries, several related to helmet loss. As an avid football fan, Jim was well aware of the concerns with concussion on every level of the game. He also noticed what appeared to be an increasing number of helmets flying off player's heads with their chin straps undone.

Jim Wegener (Wegener Safety Latch Founder & CEO) -"Due to the alarmingly high rate at which football helmets have been coming off over the past few years, I decided that I should re-invent the snap system that attaches the chin strap to the helmet. If I can save just one young man's life because he was wearing the Wegener Safety Latches on his helmet then I have fulfilled my dream. My system cannot prevent concussions or brain injuries but it can nearly eliminate helmet loss which leads to these traumatic injuries."

The response to the safety latch has been extremely encouraging; University of Nevada, Georgia, Clemson and Nebraska are just a few of the schools that are reporting positive results. Hear what some of the people are saying about the Wegener Safety Latch.

Robert D. Schimpff, MD (Board Certified Neuropathology and Neurology)"The Wegener Safety Latch provides maximum protection for football players by ensuring that the mandatory certified helmets do not come off during impact leaving the player unprotected as so often happens prior to this product. Contact between the heads of helmeted players to the unprotected head of a player who has had the helmet come off is a high risk situation and this latch prevents that nearly 100%. "

Chris Collins (Assistant Athletic Director, Equipment Operations, University of Nevada - Reno Football)

...I believe that Equipment Managers have been waiting for a better, safer way to protect our players for years. This solution is simple to install, adjust and its effective. The players love it once they get use to the latch. I would highly recommend players at all levels make the transition to the Wegener Safety Latch.
