Soo Indians News Release

The Kewadin Casino Indians Jr. A Hockey team has not only accomplished many things on the ice, but off the ice as well.

Volunteering has become second nature to the Indians hockey players. Take for example Adam Dekker, he has participated in almost every community service event for the Indians this year and has volunteered on his own time as well. He skated with his housing brother's hockey team all season, mentored children, and went to schools to read to the children.

The following are examples of volunteering that the team has participated in; United Way spaghetti dinner, United Way chili cook-off, helping hospice, skating clinics at the local prisons, reading to local school children, fundraising for the local Head Start program, pre-school skates at Pullar Stadium two days a week, spending time with senior citizens in the Long Term Care unit at War Memorial Hospital, assisting with the Kaines Rink Classic Hockey Tournament along with various other youth hockey tournaments, putting on youth hockey skates and clinics, volunteering to help during Lincoln School Fun Day, promoting the RJ Wallace Student of the Month, assisting the Family Independence Agency, and volunteering to wrap presents at the Sault Tribe Christmas Party.

The team accumulated over 1250 hours of community service between the 25 players. That averages out to 50 hours per player. Many high schools require 40 hours of community service over four years of high school. Our players accomplished that fete in just seven months!

On April 13th, the Kewadin Casino Indians hosted a skate for the winners of the "Rally for Reading" campaign for reading month. The class with the most accelerated reader points during the month of May was treated to a free skate with the team. The ice time was donated by the Chi-Mukwa Community Recreation Center. After the skate, the winners had lunch donated by Dominoes Pizza and the pop was donated by Marchetti Distributing.

This promotion was to help promote reading month to area elementary students. The winning classrooms were Mrs. Marshall's 1st grade class from Lincoln school and Mrs. Verhaagh's 5th grade class from Washington school. Mrs. Marshall's class earned 326.8 points and a total of 713 books. Tommy Korcal was the top reader in Mrs. Marshall's class. Mrs. Verhaagh's 5th grade class earned 475.8 points during the month of March. Kelsey Adams was the top reader in Mrs. Verhaagh's class.

The Kewadin Casino Indians staff and team would like to thank all of the classes that participated in "Rally for Reading" this year.
