Indiana Ice News Release
The Jacks were better----but not by much Thursday evening at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Muskegon Lumberjacks drew a 3-2 shootout victory over the Indiana Ice after the teams were deadlocked in a 2-2 tie and finished with a scoreless overtime period.
Ice coach Jeff Brown was not totally displeased in the loss where Indy picked up a point. His team notched a pair of road victories in his first two games behind the Indiana bench.
"Earning five-of-six available points in the past three games is a positive," stated the former NHL defenseman. "However, we should have scored with a four-on-three in the overtime. We did not have a shot on that rush."
In the seven-round shootout, Muskegon converted on three attempts while the Icemen scored twice.
The hosts entered the third period trailing 1-0 and had Muskegon on the ropes when they scored two unanswered goals to grab a 2-1 lead with just over 13 minutes before the final horn.
Indiana poured it on by outshooting the visitors 17-4 in the final 20 minutes of regulation after a listless first and second periods for both clubs. Woody Hudson tied it at one-all 2:57 into the third period after burying a wrist shot. Peter Hand and Joe Fiala assisted on Hudson's 12th goal of the season.
Austin Ortega gave Indy the lead less than five minutes later when Indiana converted on the power play. Hudson assisted this time and Hand had his second assist of the period at the 7:23 mark.
The Lumberjacks Cameron Darcy sent it into overtime by scoring with 5:32 left in regulation. The Ice did not muster a shot on goal in the five-minute overtime despite having a power play opportunity.
Indiana was whistled for a pair of penalties late in the second period which led to the game's only score in the first 40 minutes of play. Skating with a five-on-three advantage, the Lumberjack's Mike Brodzinski buried a wrist shot at 15:37 of the middle frame.
Neither team could dent the net in the first period. Indy had their best scoring chances in the first half of the stanza while the visitors dominated the final 10 minutes of play. Iyzk made a trio of saves to keep the game scoreless including putting the brakes on a Muskegon shot which got behind him in the crease but stopped just before the puck crossed the goal line.
"We are building. Tonight we had some positives and some bad stuff," commented Brown. "We want to keep the pressure on when in the offensive zone and play smart defense. "
The teams play again tonight as the venue shifts to Pan Am Plaza. The puck drops at 7:05 pm.
