Illinois Piasa Fall 9-8 in Wichita to the B-52s
Wichita, KS, 11/9/13 - Illinois Piasa started fast in their first road trip of the PASL season, against the Wichita B-52s, when defender John Anzalone opened the scoring at the 13:54 mark of the 1st quarter, off an assist from forward Greg Crook. Crook went diving head first at the ball that Anzalone played in and though he did not make contact, his effort was enough to distract Wichita's goalkeeper, allowing the ball to sneak in. 27 seconds later Piasa struck again when forward Blake Ordell turned on his defender and put the ball in the far, lower corner, assisted by Steve Frierdich. Wichita would get on the board at the 10:48 mark of the 1st with a goal by Heviel Cordoves (unassisted). Piasa answered 6 seconds later when Blake Ordell, from the kickoff, played the ball back to Frierdich who played a long ball back to Ordell in the corner that Ordell won, and then he immediately turned, shot, and scored. Piasa and Wichita would both score another goal in the 1st. Piasa's goal was scored by midfielder, and Captain, Damir Kordic (unassisted) with 2:19 remaining in the quarter. Ernad Cavka took a two-minute penalty for slide tackling with 32 seconds before the end of the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter began with controversy. The B-52s, still on the man advantage, missed a shot about 17 seconds in when the referee blew his whistle to stop play because the arena clock had not started. For some reason, instead of adjusting the arena clock and putting the ball back in play from where it was when the play was whistled dead, the referees elected to restart the quarter. Wichita came down the field after the second kickoff of the quarter and scored 14 seconds in. They would score again 28 seconds later to tie it up at 4-4. Piasa struck back with goals by midfielder Almin Sabotic, from defender Ernad Cavka, at 10:29, and forward Anel Ibricic, from Almin Sabotic, at 8:38 in the 2nd quarter. Piasa went to the locker room at halftime up 6-4.
Wichita came out fast in the 3rd quarter. Travis Pittman scored his third goal of the night just 21 seconds in, cutting Piasa's lead to 6-5. Wichita struck again 1:59 later on a goal by Brent Hobson, making it 6-6. Piasa would pull back in front on Almin Sabotic's second goal of the night (unassisted) at the 14:25 mark. The 3rd quarter ended with Piasa holding onto a 7-6 lead.
In the 4th quarter, Wichita again struck first, with a goal at the 12:55 mark by Casey Barton. They scored again 1:46 later when Heviel Cordoves gave the B-52s their first lead of the game. Blake Ordell completed his hat-trick (unassisted) and pulled Piasa even with 9:02 remaining in the 4th quarter. With 5:51 left in the game Wichita regained the lead on Matt Clare's second goal of the game. With 1:49 left in the game, Piasa went to Greg Crook as the 6th attacker. Crook was Piasa's goalkeeper from 2010-12 before he was sidelined with a shoulder injury that required surgery. Crook and his teammates created a couple good attempts, but could not find another goal before time expired. The final score was the Wichita B-52s 9, Illinois Piasa 8.
The next Illinois Piasa home game is Saturday, November 30 at 7:35 pm against the B-52s at The Fields Sports Complex in Pontoon Beach, Illinois. They are on the road the next two weeks. First they play the Chicago Mustangs on Saturday, November 16 at 7:05 pm and then the Cincinnati Saints on Saturday, November 23 at 7:05 ET.
