IHL names weekly award winners

ROCHESTER, MI--- The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Monday that Bloomington forward Sam Ftorek has been named the National City IHL Forward of the Week, Flint defenseman Nick Tuzzolino has been named the Pepsi IHL Defenseman of the Week, Fort Wayne center Mathieu Curadeau has been named the Aquafina IHL Rookie of the Week, and Kalamazoo goaltender Jeremy Symington has been named the Southern Sports Supply IHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 16th, 2007.

Ftorek scored the second hat trick in franchise history for Bloomington vs. Port Huron on Saturday night. He had a total of four goals and three assists during the four games played. The Wolfeboro, New Hampshire native is currently riding a six game point streak, scoring seven goals and three assists in those six games. Ftorek is second in scoring for the PrairieThunder with 21 points (14 goals, 4 assists).

Other players nominated for the National City IHL Forward of the Week include: Flint forward Josef Fojtik, Fort Wayne right wing David Hukalo, Kalamazoo center Glenn Detulleo and Port Huron left wing Tab Lardner.

Tuzzolino had a solid week on the Generals blue line. He had a plus/minus rating of plus-3 in the two games played this past week. He scored one power play goal Saturday vs. Kalamazoo and had one assist Friday in Bloomington. All three of Tuzzolino's goals scored this season have come on the power play. The 21-year old Buffalo, New York native went plus-3 for the week, bringing his season total to plus-11.

Other defenseman nominated for the Pepsi IHL Defenseman of the Week include: Bloomington's Rob Guinn, Fort Wayne's Guy Dupuis, Kalamazoo's Florian Iberer and Port Huron's Jamie Lovell.

Curadeau recorded his first professional hat trick Saturday night, helping push the Komets into overtime against the Fury. The rookie center scored a total of six points last week (5 goals, 1 assist). After scoring five goals in three games, no other rookie has scored more so far this season than Curadeau (14). The 22-year old Montreal, Quebec native also had a plus/minus rating of plus-four, bringing his total to plus-13 on the season, which leads all rookies in the IHL. He is currently riding a four game goal (6 goals) and point streak (7 points).

Other players nominated for the Aquafina Rookie of the Week include: Bloomington right wing Brett Holmberg, Flint defenseman Nick Tuzzolino, Kalamazoo forward/defenseman Mike Bickley, and Port Huron right wing Jamie Carroll.

Symington recorded the K-Wings first shutout of the season Friday when he closed the door on all 36 shots he faced vs. Muskegon. He had a total of 76 saves for the week, only allowing six goals against, posting a 2.01 goals against average and playing just over 179 minutes. The 29-year old Camlachie, Ontario native had a .927 save percentage, bringing his total to a IHL leading .933. He also leads the IHL goaltenders in wins with nine.

Other goaltenders nominated for the Southern Sports Supply IHL Goaltender of the Week include: Bloomington's Loic Lacasse, Flint's Eric Marvin, Fort Wayne's Nick Boucher and Port Huron's Larry Sterling.
