March 23, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks will hit the road for three games in three days this weekend as the IHL regular season winds down. With just four weeks to play until the start of the Turner Cup Playoffs, the Icehawks continue to battle for position. The Icehawks can officially clinch their third consecutive playoff berth with their next win.
The Icehawks will travel to Dayton for a matchup with the Gems Friday before heading to Bloomington for games with the PrairieThunder Saturday and Sunday. Port Huron has been very successful against these teams this season, with a combined record of 15-3-0-0 against the Gems and the PrairieThunder. Seven of the Icehawks' last 12 games will be played against Dayton and Bloomington.
Port Huron earned two wins in three home games last week, losing to Fort Wayne in a St. Patrick's Day showdown before defeating Dayton and Flint over the weekend. The team raised over $4,000 for charity when they auctioned off their game-worn Guinness jerseys following Wednesday night's game.
Heading into this week's slate, the Icehawks are three points behind Fort Wayne in third place in the IHL standings with an overall record of 39-21-0-4. If the season ended today, the Icehawks would take on the Komets in the first round of the playoffs, with Fort Wayne holding home-ice advantage. With 12 games to play in the regular season, the Icehawks have an even split of six games at home and six on the road, and a winning record against 11 of their last 12 opponents.
Welcome Back: Mike Kinnie was extremely successful in his first week back from injury. The right winger earned his second hat trick of the 2009-10 season Saturday against his former team, the Flint Generals. That night was also his first four-point game with the Icehawks. Kinnie has missed 40 games this season due to injury and was among the IHL's leading scorers when he went down in late November. With 26 points (17 goals, nine assists) in 24 games, Kinnie is one of three Icehawks skaters averaging more than a point per game this season.
Keeping Up The Pace: Derek Patrosso had a goal and two assists last week to improve his point streak to a team-best 11 games. The forward has at least one point in every game since February 26, scoring five goals and ten assists during the streak. Patrosso is tied with Muskegon's Todd Robinson and Robin Bouchard for the longest active streak in the IHL. Teammate Brandon Naurato saw his point streak snapped at ten games when he was held scoreless Saturday night.
Rollin' Rookie: With a goal and an assist this week, Mickael Bedard continues his dominance among IHL rookies. Bedard leads all IHL rookies in goals (32), assists (34), points (66), power play goals (11) and +/- rating (+26). Of the top 20 rookie scorers, Bedard is the only player averaging at least a point per game, with 66 points in 64 games. Bedard has already outscored last season's Rookie of the Year Rick Cleaver, who scored 61 points for the Kalamazoo Wings.
