Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League announced that right wing Jason Kostadine has signed a contract for the 2009-10 season, becoming the first player to come to terms for the upcoming campaign. Per team policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.
Kostadine (6-2, 210) comes to the Icehawks after four seasons in the East Coast Hockey League and one year overseas. He made his professional debut in the 2004-05 season with the Texas Wildcatters and immediately established himself as a tough competitor with a team-high 224 penalty minutes in 68 games. His ECHL career then continued with stints in Stockton, Reading, Augusta and Bakersfield.
Last season, he played in England with the Hull Stingrays (EIHL) and accrued 29 points (13g, 16a) and 137 penalty minutes in 60 games. Overall, the winger has netted 71 points (31g, 40a) and racked up 774 penalty minutes in 285 games. His five-year professional career has included 72 fights, according to www.dropyourgloves.com.
"I am excited for next season and looking forward to a new chapter in my hockey career," Kostadine said. "Playing in Europe last season was a great experience, but I wanted to be closer to home and Port Huron was a great fit. I have talked to former players and people in the hockey world and they all had great things to say about the organization."
The 25-year old native of St. Louis, Missouri played three seasons of junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (2000-2003), including two seasons with the Hull Olympiques and one with the Quebec Remparts. He wrapped up his junior career with 54 points (18g, 36a) and 605 penalty minutes in 195 games.
He was an eighth round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and skated with the team in the preseason of the 2003-04 campaign, before heading to the ECHL.
